and a happy new year.

We had a lovely New Year's Eve, without even going near Times Square!

First, we took a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to lower Manhattan, where we admired the architecture. Next we took the train up to Murray Hill, a part of Manhattan picture above, where there is a lot of cool Art Deco stuff, including the lovely Chrysler Building.

Later we met our friends Brooke and Ian (in the next picture) and rang in the new year in a part of Brooklyn called Park Slope.

Here we are on the train, making an ill-fated trip to a friend's party which turned out to be minus the friend. We had fun anyway! It was a good night, and we are now enjoying Chance's last day of freedom before he starts a long few days of work.

Happy New Year!

a very merry christmas

The weekend before Christmas, we continued our thorough investigation of New York's sweets with some hot chocolate at the City Bakery. It was good, but you should really only ever drink an espresso-sized serving. It's incredibly rich! We felt a little queasy afterwards. (This did not, however, deter the two "real" Hohensees from making sure the gingerbread cookies at home had been properly baked.)

On Christmas Eve, we went to the Met ...

... and later joined our friends Sarah and Dylan for Christmas Eve mass at Grace Episcopal Church, where Sarah was singing. It was awesome, and there were candles. So Christmasy!

On Christmas day, Chance commenced the cooking of the Goose, which turned out very tasty:

But, sadly, quite fatty as well. Most of what you see here is actually just fat. There must have only been about 4 pounds of meat on the 13.5 pound bird ... next year we're definitely doing a ham!

Christmas dinner was yummy, though, and we were joined by numerous good friends. It was very cheery!

The next day, Elyse and I went to Coney Island to wander around.

It got a thumbs-up.

We wandered into the aquarium, just in time for the sea lion show ...

... and we saw the walruses. They are BIG, and I do mean big, as in bigger than polar bears! And they were swimming back and forth, zooming past the windows ... it was fun to watch them.

On Friday we took Elyse to the airport and saw her off ... it was so much fun having her, and we can't wait for her to visit us (hopefully) in the summer!!!
